Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is composed from the dense forests along with the Peppara dam constructed around the Karamana River and was declared as being a sanctuary in 1983 to enhance the drinking drinking water provide to Thiruvananthapuram as well as the adjoining suburbs.

This sanctuary with its rich fauna and birds is emerging like a big attraction to wildlife enthusiasts.. This is dotted with big hills and several hillocks with forests and Eucalyptus plantations.
The bird species specially the water birds like darter, small cormorant, pied king fisher and egrets are most generally observed inside the sanctuary. Numerous species of snakes such as the king cobra and python are dominantly present during this sanctuary.
The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is also renowned for its extensive variety of moth and butterflies. Apart from the wildlife, you'll find 13 tribal settlements in the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary.
